To give you something deeper and more human than just a meet-and-greet, we’ve curated experiences, meals, tours and events designed to inspire, educate, nourish, and entertain. Dress for all events is comfortable and casual and your favorite walking shoes are encouraged!
All events requiring transportation will be by tour bus originating from and returning to The Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel, Charleston.

Dorothea Benton Frank will greet fanfest attendees in the Rutledge/Heyward/Lynch ballroom at The Mills House. We’ll enjoy cocktails and some light bites. Books will be on sale and Dorothea will be on hand for signing!

Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Charleston
Enjoy breakfast on your own and then gather at the Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel to meet your tour guide from Tommy Dew’s Walking History Tour. Tommy or one of his expert staff will provide an historical overview of the city as we walk from the Market - through the old walled-city - to the Battery, and pass historic homes, buildings, churches and gardens.
1:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Carolina Queen Jazz Cruise
We’ll convene at The Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel to board our tour bus for the 1 mile trip to Charleston Harbor where we will board the Carolina Queen for afternoon of cold drinks, and delicious BBQ from award-winning Swig & Swine and live blues from Shrimp City Slim. The tour bus will take us back to The Mills House and we will reconvene in the Queen Street Gallery at 5 pm.

Savannah Bee Company Honey Tasting & Bee Hive Exhibit
Join us in a pre-cocktail hour sampling of Savannah Bee Company specialty honey and beauty products. Savannah Bee Company honey is the culmination of a 35-year search, both locally and around the world for the very best. Their beauty products deliver real benefits derived from treasured honeybee hive ingredients– beeswax, royal jelly, propolis, and honey. The Bee Cause Project, will also join us to exhibit their live observation hive set-up, complete with a Honey Bee Photo Booth (with bee inspired props).
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Cocktail Reception & Banquet
After honey sampling, head into the Mills House ballroom for a reception and banquet. You’ll enjoy cocktails and a sumptuous dinner and hosted by Dorothea Benton Frank. She’ll talk about her career as a bestselling author and answer all your burning questions. We will also joined virtually by fans around the country via Facebook Live!

Bloodies & Biscuits
On Saturday morning, we’ll once again convene at The Mills House to take stroll to the Historic King Street shopping district to work up an appetite for Callie’s Biscuits and Bloody Marys hosted by Croghan’s Jewel Box. Croghan’s is a treasure trove of the most exciting and unique inventory in the Lowcountry, from estate and antique finds, to gifts for every occasion. The Croghan’s will host a lovely shopping experience and breakfast, guaranteed to exceed your typical Saturday morning fare at home!

Shop Historic King Street
After breakfast, you’ll have an opportunity to shop King Street on your own. Arguably Charleston’s most famous shopping spot, King Street has been attracting boutique lovers, fashion connoisseurs, and antique collectors to its cobblestone sidewalks for years. Here, you’ll find everything from Louis Vuitton to Kate Spade, Sperry’s to Pottery Barn, and Forever 21 to Urban Outfitters. Be sure to stop by Blue Bicycle Books, the only independent bookseller in Charleston, where you will have an opportunity to pre-order signed editions of Dorothea’s upcoming 20th novel Queen Bee, on sale May 28th!
12:00 pM - 3:00 pM
Be sure to make it back to The Mills House in time to board the tour bus at noon for a jaunt over to Sullivans Island, childhood home of Dorothea Benton Frank. We’ll get a short tour of this quaint little island and then head over to Dottie’s current home for a backyard lunch prepared by the team at renowned Chef Jaques Larson’s The Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive restaurants.
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Fort Sumter National Monument -
After lunch, we’ll take a quick 6 minute walk over to Fort Moultrie and work off all that great food, touring this National Monument. Fort Moultrie is the only area of the National Park System where the entire 171-year history of American seacoast defense (1776–1947) can be traced. We’ll take a 45-minute Ranger led guided tour and then visit the museum and shop.

Pool Party & BBQ at
Wild Dunes Resort
We’ll board the bus and head over to Isle of Palms (IOP), where we’ll fall into some lounge chairs and enjoy a down home pig roast and BBQ set by the gorgeous pool at the Wild Dunes Resort. Dress your pool/beach party best for the on-site photo booth where you can instantly email and post all the fun you’re having for your loved ones at home! The tour bus will depart Wild Dunes at 10:00 pm back to The Mills House Wyndham in Charleston. Wild Dunes Resort is also offering a discounted room rate, so be sure to check the travel link to see the list of preferred hotels for fanfest guests.
